Lifeline….. H2O

If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in water.

— Loren Eisky.

Human body, studies say 60% of human body is made of water. This heavenly drink is necessary for our body. We all know and studied also show that its the major building block of our body components, helps it to function smoothly, do the required filtration work, 80% of our blood is made up of water. Yes we all know how important is water for us, but we still ignore it somehow, due to our extremely busy lifestyle. I have seen people working out very intensely for long durations, without consuming even a sip of water. It’s true that one should have at least 8 glasses of water everyday, which helps regulating the functionality of the body.

In today’s blog, I will focus on how much water one should have, while working out. It really doesn’t matter which exercise you do, you should stay hydrated all the time. And same way drinking too much water can cause water intoxication (where the sodium levels in blood falls).

Some keys to consider,

  • Drink a glass of water 30 minutes prior to starting workout. Don’t giggle in tons of water, it will make you feel nausea.
  • Keep yourself hydrated, drink in some water in between while switching your exercises.
  • Avoid cold water, because water at normal temperature, hydrates the body better, as compared to water at lower temperature.
  • Lack of water during exercise would eventually increase heart rate, fatigue and loss of concentration.
  • Moreover, while working out (specially cardio) our joints take lot of pressure and they start losing lubricants which causes injury. So, drinking water is very necessary for lubrication of joints.
  • I remember, my biology professor always pointed out the importance of protein synthesis in our body which is not possible without water (lack of water causes the enzymes to extract the amino acids for synthesis, to malfunction).
  • Sometimes, our body tends to experience fatigueness in muscles during workout and gradually the energy levels declines, water is the best medicine then, just sip in some water and let it settle down (rest for few minutes) before jumping back.
  • On the contrary, water logging (drinking too much water) yourself is equally dangerous, it could leave you delirious as well (source: wall street journal).

I know this topic is very basic and common one, but yes this lifeline of ours has to be taken into consideration for a healthy living.

Truely said,

Water is the central to the well being of people and the planet.
